Many bands have covered and/or remixed Numan songs. Which is your favorite?

Personally, I'm going with Information Society's "Are 'Friends' Electric?"

House of Blues

On August 23rd I saw Gary Numan in concert at the House of Blues in Anaheim. Wow! What a great show!

Dressed in camouflage pants and a black t-shirt, Numan belted out tune after classic tune in a sort of new-wave meets Nine Inch Nails fashion. He definitely has a much harder, darker edge to his sound than he had back in the earlier days. Songs like “Films” and “Are Friends Electric?” didn’t sound dated at all. In fact, either one could be a chart topper today with the new way he performs them.

Unfortunately, I have not purchased a CD of new Numan recordings since Outland in 1991. Because of this, I was not familiar with many of the songs he performed.

I was a bit surprised at the fairly small crowd that attended. There seemed to be plenty of room to move around in the normally packed building. I was expecting a much bigger turnout.

I spoke with Numan after the Phoenix gig re: 2 UNRELEASED DEMOS I have from 1978-79 circa...even Numan HIMSELF forgot ALL about them!!!!

YES! I had a FAB time.
Gary Webb(Numan) is TRULY a VERY genuine, kind, and NON-pretentious soul.

Anyway, after the fabulous gig he put on 2 days ago in Phoenix, AZ( August 22nd) I met him, took a picture w/ him& talked with him while he signed 2 VERY rare original 1980 Telekon posters for me. Unfortunately we only talked for about 2-3 min. as there was a LOOONG line of peeps waiting for him to sign a myriad of goodies.

And as we were talking, he actually remembered me from his Exile tour in 1998, when I actually had the luxury of getting past security & hanging backstage with him at The Palace in Hollywood/LA in May of '98...we hung out and talked for about 45 min. or so( ironically we talked about Christianity for a while too) & it was VERY special to me~
b/c it was JUST Gary, me, his girlfriend/wife, manager & the other band members~
so it was REALLY intimate!

ANYWAY, AS FOR THE 2( VERY COOL) UN-RELEASED TRAX.....
I mentioned to him on Tuesday that I had a VERY rare cassette that I have had for about 15 yrs or so,(that I got from the old president of the North American Numan Fan Club) with one of his 1st gigs from 1977-78....BUT, the STRANGE thing was at the END of the gig, is tacked on 2 VERY "raw" sounding demo's, of pretty good quality too!!!

Anyway, Gary said he has about 80-100 trax from 1978-79 that he not only does NOT remember recording, but he said about 50% of them do/did NOT even have TITLES!
At first he was a bit angry...but NOT at me, he was angry that these 2 trax were leaked out in the 1st place, with OUT his permission!!!
Probably some bastard from Beggars Banquet stole them for personal use and they leaked out, you know?
Anyway, Gary DID let me keep them still(of course) BUT, he asked me to PLEASE send him a copy of the 2 trax so he can GET to the BOTTOM of this.

So I DO feel SUPER-SPECIAL, that I actually OWN Numan 2 trax that have NEVER been released EVER. One track is 3:16, the other is just about 3:00....
BUT, the STRANGE thing is, is that these 2 trax(especially the 1st one) are F#@KIN' STELLLAR!!! They sound along the lines of a cross between trax like "Everyday I Die", "My love is a Liquid", "Me! I disconnect from you" "Bombers" & "You are in my Vision"
And I am REALLY surprised that they were NOT improved upon & made into "official" trax!!
Maybe someday they will, as Beggars Banquet said in Numan's new discography book that they have a LOT of studio outakes, demo's & live trax that have NEVER seen the light & they are possibly planning on releasing them in the near future!
I HOPE SO!
If ANYONE is interested in trading these VERY RARE early trax for something of equal rarity please send me a private msg...
But you MUST promise NOT to sell/gain for profit, but to ONLY enjoy them for your OWN pleasure!

SF show 8/19

The SF show at the Fillmore last Saturday was really good. It was a good mixture of new material off Jagged, the classic standards like "Metal", "Are 'Friends' Electric?" and "Down in the Park", and a few off of Pure. The show was great but much like the album Jagged I couldn't help feeling that it was just like the tour he did for Pure only with new songs.

The opening act (which I wasn't expecting since they weren't listed on the ticket or the website) was called New Skin and they sounded like Lene Lovich singing for Altered Images if they were now called Evanescence. If that makes any sense. They were OK, but I rarely like the opening acts.

Since I didn't know there was an opener and Gary didn't come on until almost 10:30 I had to leave early to get the car back on time. For anyone who was there --- what were the last few songs he performed and what did he do for an encore?

Thursday, July 27th, Strangelove pays homage to electro pioneer GARY NUMAN. DJs Fact50 and Tomas Diablo will be spinning the best dark electro, new wave and industrial from Gary Numan and like-minded artists. We will be giving away tickets to see Gary Numan perform live at the Fillmore (August 19th). And III returns with a stunning display of visuals that's sure to please any androgynous android.
STRANGELOVE: tribute to GARY NUMAN

WHY WE LOVE GARY NUMAN:

In 1979, Gary Numan turned away from guitars and embraced the cold new sound of synthesizers. In the span of just 6 months, he released "Replicas" and "The Pleasure Principle", and created a whole new genre: synth. Since then he has continuously re-invented himself, and in 1994, Gary embraced industrial and darkwave. In 2003, Gary released "Hybrid", a collection of industrial revisions of older material, and one of the greatest albums of this decade so far.

has anyone got the chance to "hang-out" with Mr. Webb(G. Numan)....I actually HAVE!!

It was backstage after the May 1998 "exile-tour" gig at The Palace...(where a Ridiculous Marylon Manson got on stage w/ Gary during "down in the Park" & RUINED the song as he sang along w/ Gary)...that was the ONLY down-side of the show...other than that, it was EXCELLENT!

Anyway, backstage, He was SOOO Cool & VERY kind and friendly.

My friend and I were NOT supposed to be back there(the security guy FINALLY let us in after we talked him into it.( I guess it helps if your friend is a really cute girl!) ...& with Gary's kindness, he invited us to hang out.

It was just Gary, his girlfriend/wife, his manager, the other band members, and just me & my friend!!

We all (the 9 or 10 of us) had drinks with him(for about 30-45 min,) & Gary & I ACTUALLY discussed Christianity, as I am a Christian, and we discussed some of the "contraversial lyrics" on his "exile" album..
I actually told him I disagreed with some of his views RE: the Exile cd & that I actually didn't like it as much, (because of some of the content on the CD that I disagreed with), & He was TOTALLY cool about it!! (as he is an agnostic/athiest)...

he actually COMPLIMENTED me on my courage for saying how I TRULY felt, rather than lie about it. he said ..."you know, It really takes balls to come out and say that, I respect that. Most fans who might feel the way you do would NOT even talk about it, or if they DID, they would probably lie and "sugar-coat" it by saying "oh yes, I really liked the new album etc', & not even bring up their REAL feelings, so I appreciate your honesty"....
He also said that He & HIS DRUMMER actually talk about religion/christianity a lot...as he said that his drummer was a Christian & "pretty much feels the same way that you do"...(I don't know if he has the same drummer now, as he did 8 yrs ago, as I only saw Numan one time in concert)
But gary laughed & joked, saying , " yeah, we "argue/dabate" about that stuff sometimes, as he(the drummer) is always trying to talk to me about God/Jesus......but I still love him anyway" and Gary and the drummer laughed about it. ...and Gary & I talked about other things too, of course...i.e. musical influences, how his "gig" went that night, etc. etc.

Now don't get me wrong, I am NOT some bible-thumping X-IAN on a soap-box, I don't go around "preaching" etc. I am REALLY, VERY open-minded, as I have friends who are Wiccan, homosexuals, Pagan's etc....and I LOVE them ALL!! (they all know how I feel, we just "agree to dis-agree" when it comes to that subject) ...and i have my vices etc. that would make some people think "there is NO way tht guy is a Christian!"

I just happened to talk to Gary(by pure coincidence, it was NOT planned) about that stuff ...I probably did it b/c my inhibitions were GONE, as I was GONE, & FLYING HIGH(because I was on Oxy-Contin(it's like morphine) for back pain from a car accident) and I didn't really care WHAT I was saying....... :-)

And I DON'T think Gary would of REALLY talked to me as long or as in-depth as we did, if I was NOT true to my heart, re: my views/beliefs.
Because, as he WAS very nice to us, it was not until we started talking about Christianity etc., that I noticed he really opened up & took much more interest in me & what I was saying...in fact, for a while, it was JUST the 2 of us talking...we had "tuned out" the others around us for a little while.

So, I guess the moral here is: ....no matter WHAT you believe, be TRUE to youself & be a genuine person and for the MOST part, if you do that, I think people(like Gary did) will respect you more for being real, & you can STILL be friends with someone DESPITE what either of you believe........ Just food for thought!

But anyway, ...it WAS killer meeting and talking with Gary!!

Has anyone heard the remix album in it's entirety? Reviews? I'm so tempted to just order the thing...

Saw Kraftwerk at Coachella, and good lord have their songs benefitted from updated sonics... it seems like Numan's better tracks would fare very well also.

Funny how ppl like Plump DJ's and other top UK acts are renting out Gary['s voice for their projects... kinda like the Robert Smith revival that seems to be in full swing.

I made myself a Gary Numan tape for the car awhile back and durn if I couldn't find it there for awhile. This was, you must understand, quite a problem because there's just no substitute for Gary Numan when the mood (or vitamin deficiency) hits me.

So anyway, I found my tape yesterday, on the floor under a discarded take-out coffee cup. Can't wait for the drive to work today, it's gonna be just me, some more coffee and GARY!

Gary Numan - past shows and radio airplay

Has anyone seen Gary Numan perform in the US? I saw him back in 1998 in Washington DC. I brought some old albums, and Gary signed them before the show. He also let me bring in my camera to take photos.

Well, the show was nothing short of phenominal, and I was blown away. It might be that way since I had been waiting almost 20 years to finally see him and he does not make it over to the colonies much.

Regardless, KCRW (Los Angeles) has been playing some new Numan tracks in the evenings for the past few weeks. Rock on.
